Chapter 8: Little Feather

Little Feather sat there on the ground. The young man was as much frustrated as embarrassed. But at least he and his friends weren't dead, which was the outcome that they had expected after running into this bunch of white men with so many guns. The young Cheyenne Brave shook his head a couple of times trying to clear his mind after the hard tumble he had from his horse when it was shot dead.

Hoss Cole and Captain Bates dismounted and walked over to the young Cheyenne Brave sitting there in the dust looking lost for what to do next. Figuring if he stood up he would get shot by the two men nearing him with their pistols in hand. Little Feather raised his hands in the air in surrender as the old Texas Ranger picked up his long-rifle from where it had fallen. The other four young boys on Mustangs just sat there not knowing what to do with their leader giving up in surrender and all.

Rancor, Roberto, and Biff all rode their horses over to the other Cheyenne and disarmed the four boys without as much as a grumble. It would appear that the Cheyenne Braves were just as surprised to run into a bunch of lawmen and an old Texas Ranger as the gunslingers were to have run into a small party of Indians. Figuring that with so few folks out this way they could make their way across the country and not see another person. Which would usually be the case. But there seemed to be more people out here than meets the eye.

"I was reliably informed that any wild Indians left had run off to Mexico," Harold Stampede stated, still somewhat shocked to have run into hostile Indians.

"You may not be as well informed as you think," the Captain said. "The boys here ain't in Mexico. And their young leader was carrying a Winchester rifle which is an expensive gun."

"They ain't but a bunch of kids," Marshal Hoss Cole said. "We need to get them headed back to where they came from as the next bunch of white men they encounter may not be as friendly as us."

"Where are you boys from?" Captain Bates asked the Indian in Cheyenne.

"The Cheyenne Reservation in the southern Montana Territories," the war party leader replied in Spanish.

"Well, I reckon we best head to the nearest fort or town and see that these boys get returned to their families," Hoss said. "I figure that if we can get the Army to escort them home, it will be safest. They may get beat on some by the soldiers, but they won't be kilt."

"If I remember right there was a small town farther up a ways," Captain Bates said.

The men tied the hands of the young Braves in front of their bodies so they would be more comfortable and could manage their horses. Then they all mounted up and carried on along the trail towards western Wyoming. Now getting nearer with every day.
